Performing Tour in Guangzhou

JongJazz, the band started by Blenda Lau, had their first tour outside of the United States from Jan 3-8. JongJazz consists of 4 musicians from Berklee College of Music: Blenda Lau as pianist and pipa-ist; Jason Lee as Violinist and arranger; Billy Yeung as woodwind musician (including flutes, saxophones); and Victor Gonzalez as Bassist. They combine Chinese music with other genres of music such as Jazz, folk, Middle East. They experiment and create new sounds. In this tour, they showcase their piece to the big crowd of Chinese audience for 4 nights in different part of Guangzhou.

Recording for Guerilla Recording Technique@Berklee Center

Learning Center trainers Blair Pershyn and Eric Levine were on hand in the Media Lab to provide a crash course in DIY recording techniques using a variety of inexpensive gear. With the help of Helen De La Rosa on drums and Learning Center work-studies Judy Shin on keyboard, Oliver Bernstein on guitar, Blenda Lau on pipa, and Grace Jessop on vocals, they recorded The Fugee's version of Charles Fox's song "Killing Me Softly" and demonstrated the capabilities of the industry standard DAW Pro Tools. Throughout the session, they discussed recording gear, session setup, microphone types, polar patterns, frequency response, microphone techniques, and more. Performed Pipa with ROTU Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of Boston's 9-Day Free Music Festival. Blenda Lau (pipa), Gene Shinozaki (beatbox) and Max Jackson (Didgeridoo) performed a Chinese tune together!
